USAID/RTI LAUNCHES “E-WASH” PROGRAM, OCTOBER 2018

USAID launched a program called, “Effective Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene services” (E-WASH) in Abuja this week. The goal of this program is to improve the availability of clean water and sanitation  for five hundred thousand (500,000) households in selected urban areas in six (6) states in Nigeria. These states are Abia, Delta, Imo, Niger, Sokoto and Taraba. The program is to be implemented by RTI.

The Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, current senator and former governor of same state, Senator Theodore Orji and several other dignitaries were present at the event.

During his keynote remarks at the event, the Mission Director of USAID/Nigeria, Stephen Haykin said regarding the program, “Under the E-WASH activity our implementing partner, Research Triangle Institute, will work with the six state water boards to establish and maintain a path toward financial and commercial viability as effective water utilities in terms of operations, infrastructure, customer satisfaction, and financial performance”.

KWARA STATE INVOLVES THE NIGERIAN MILITARY IN NTD ACTIVITIES, OCTOBER 2018

Kwara State NTD team led by the state coordinator, last week, paid an advocacy visit to the Nigerian army barracks in the state as part of mobilization for MAM. The visit was used as an opportunity to provide sensitization for all NTDs in the state. The team was received by the Medical Adviser of the cantonment. Since then, selected CDDs have been trained, and Onchocerciasis/ Lymphatic Filariasis treatment of the soldiers and their families has commenced. Sightsavers is the supporting partner for these activities.

 

ABIA STATE NTD TEAM VISITS ABIA STATE COUNCIL OF TRADITIONAL RULERS, OCTOBER 2018

Abia State NTD team, this week paid an advocacy visit to Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers. Traditional rulers from seventeen (17) LGAs of the state were represented at the meeting.

The Chairman of the Council expressed gratitude for the NTD awareness created thus far and pledged support to the NTD program in the state. He also mandated every traditional ruler in Abia State to ensure effective coverage during the next round of MAM. The Carter Center is the supporting partner in Abia State.

AKWA IBOM STATE PREPARES LGA TEAM FOR STH MAM, OCTOBER 2018

In Akwa Ibom state this week, training towards Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) MAM was conducted at the LGA level. The training was done at three (3) centres, one of which was Eket LGA where thirty-two (32) persons were trained.

Helen Keller International is the supporting partner for this training.
